RCT UNLEASHES THE
BIG FRIENDLY GIANT
Rochester, NY – Rochester Children’s Theatre and Nazareth College Arts Center open RCT’s 17th season with Roald Dahl’s The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) at Nazareth College Arts Center (4245 East Avenue) at 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. Tickets are $12 ($10 for Arts Center subscribers) and are available at the Arts Center Box Office at 585-389-2170. RCT’s production, directed by Lucia Ennocenti, uses shadow puppets,
lighting effects, giant masks, and an ensemble cast of six talented actors to
bring Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s book to life on stage. Well-known Rochester
character actor Mark Scott Almekinder is RCT’s “BFG,” while 15-year old
Gracie Martin is the show’s “Sophie.” Tim Cawley, Meghan Haines, Jason
Mincer and Sara Skinner play a total of 16 parts that include the
play’s not-so-friendly giants: “The Childchewer,” “The Fleshlumpeater,” “The
Bonecruncher,” and “The Bloodbottler.” The production is expected to tour to
other arts centers later in the season. About The BFG: when orphan Sophie is taken by a Giant, she fears that he's going to eat her. But, as he explains in his unique way of talking, "I is the only nice and jumbly Giant in Giant Country! I is THE BIG FRIENDLY GIANT! I is the BFG." The BFG tells Sophie how he mixes up dreams to blow through a trumpet into the rooms of sleeping children. But soon, all of the BFG's powers are put to the test as he and Sophie – along with the Queen – battle to stop the other Giants. “Roald Dahl’s books are a playground of words and images that unlock the imaginations of ‘chiddlers’ and adults alike,” says RCT Producing Artistic Director Deborah Haber. His stories are ‘whizzpopping’ wonderful, and audiences will have a ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ good time!" Rochester Children’s Theatre is a professional company of adult actors that was co-founded by Deborah Haber in 1991. Since its beginning, RCT’s mission has been to offer families a high-quality, literature-based experience that entertains while fostering enrichment, communication and positive values. Its public audience has grown from 4,800 to more than 40,000 annually, and RCT has been in residence at the Arts Center and a partner in producing children’s theatre with Nazareth College since 2003. RCT’s 2007-08 season also includes The Wizard of Oz (Dec. 8, 9, 15 & 16); Charlotte’s Web (Feb. 23, 24 & March 1, 2) and Quilters (March 29, 30 & April 5, 6).
