About Us
Rochester Children’s Theatre is a
professional company of adult actors that brings literature to life for
children of all ages. It is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is
supported by the community it serves through ticket sales, as well as
through public and private funding and donations.
Our mission is to offer high quality, affordable cultural
experiences that entertain while fostering enrichment, communication,
positive values and an awareness of literature to as broad and diverse
an audience as possible.
Our history dates back to 1991, when current Producing Artistic
Director Deborah Haber and fellow actor Stuart Burke founded Rochester
Children’s Theatre. RCT’s first home was the Memorial Art Gallery’s
Cutler Union, where it debuted with Androcles & the Lion.
By 1997, RCT had outgrown its space at the MAG. The company moved
across the street to the School of the Arts’ mainstage, and began
presenting an annual holiday show at
Nazareth College Arts Center as
well.
With audiences continuing to grow, RCT moved again, this time to the
1,000-plus-seat Nazareth
College Arts Center in 2003, where it also
became a partner with Nazareth College in producing children’s theatre.
This residency has further broadened the reach of Rochester Children’s
Theatre, whose audience has grown from 4,800 to more than 40,000
annually as it enters its 18th season.
Our programs include:
-
Public
performances at Nazareth College Arts Center feature five
mainstage shows per season, as well as a summer production.
-
School matinee
performances at Nazareth College Arts Center are attended by
more than 25,000 students from 70 regional schools each year.
-
Plays on Tour
are our portable shows that bring high quality theatre into schools
throughout a nine-county area.
-
Tours to
other public venues across the region.
-
Theatre
workshops at Nazareth College Arts Center for children ages 8 to
12 include fall, spring and summer sessions.
-
Summer Programs
for students 8-15 years at Nazareth College.
Our commitment to the Rochester
community is reflected in our outreach policy of
reduced-priced or free tickets to under-served populations from rural to
inner-city schools. We also offer reduced-priced tours to under-funded
schools which could not otherwise afford the educational experience.
Our major supporters include New York State Council on the Arts,
Time Warner Cable, Nazareth College, N.Y. State Senator James Alesi,
Monroe County, N.Y. State Senator Joe Robach, Post Central,
Constellation Brands, the Joan and Harold Feinbloom Foundation, Arts &
Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, Fred & Floy Willmott Foundation,
Marie C. and Joseph C. Wilson Foundation, Ellen and Guido Palma
Foundation, and many others.
